This tool would be fantastic for setting up 'safe searching' in a classroom or school rather than a list of links in a folder - very visual. Would take a little while to set up initially but well worth it.

Red Hat (Feelings) What do you like about this site? What don't you like about it?
Useful for Junior classes
The American accents may be a little off putting.
Yellow Hat (Benefits) What benefits do you see in using this site in your classroom?
Could enhance the Literacy programme
Black Hat (Judgement) Do you see any barriers to using this site?
White Hat (Information/Facts) What information do your learners need to experience success using this site?
Junior children would need to be walked through the site.

During Literacy time

Red Hat (Feelings) What do you like about this site?
It has 'real' photo's in some of the stories
It is levelled
What don't you like about it?
It doesn't have a button to read the whole sentence/story (you have to click on each word to hear them individually).
Yellow Hat (Benefits) What benefits do you see in using this site in your classroom?
Children can relate to stories made by other children.
Children can use it independently
No advertising
Black Hat (Judgement) Do you see any barriers to using this site?
Voices are heavily accented

How to open the stories and click to change the pages or read the words.
Blue Hat (Thinking/Process) What level would this resource be suitable for?:
A wide variety

Telescopic Text
Red Hat (Feelings) What do you like about this site? What don't you like about it?
I like the sense of intrigue I get when clicking thehighlighted words. I kept wondering when each word would lead to it's ending node. From a technical standpoint, the JavaScript code is simple enough that it will run in virtually any web browser.
Yellow Hat (Benefits) What benefits do you see in using this site in your classroom?
This could be used to help students explore sentence structure, and to think of alternative ways of writing their thoughts.
Black Hat (Judgement) Do you see any barriers to using this site?
This site will not work if JavaScript is turned off in the browser (Some browsers have JavaScript disabled due to security precautions.).
White Hat (Information/Facts) What information do your learners need to experience success using this site?
They need to be able to decode words and gain meaning from the words. They also need to have appropriate motor skills for placing the mouse over and clicking on the words.
Blue Hat (Thinking/Process) What level would this resource be suitable for?:
Perhaps years 3 - 7?
Green Hat (Creativity/Ideas) How would you use this in the classroom?
I would have students explore the site and try to predict how the sentences would change. I would also have students create their own telescopic texts, and do detailed teaching of how to make 'decision trees' and 'nodes,' which are the basis of this activity.

Create your own Superhero
Create your own Super Hero
Red Hat (Feelings) What do you like about this site?
A bit of fun, would have high interest for kids.
What don't you like about it?
It only creates a cover, thought it wold do more.
On the female heroes, quite pronounced feminine form.
Yellow Hat (Benefits) What benefits do you see in using this site in your classroom?
Great writing prompt
Obvious use for cartooning
Could be some good oral language prompts around super powers and heroes.
What makes a hero? Abilities, costume, characteristics.
Need for anonymity
What is an Avartar....at a stretch.
Black Hat (Judgement) Do you see any barriers to using this site?
Printing Hero page would be difficult/costly.
It's a prompting tool.....other than learning to navigate this particular site, not huge learning.
White Hat (Information/Facts) What information do your learners need to experience success using this site?
Just learn how to navigate site.....quite easy.
Blue Hat (Thinking/Process) What level would this resource be suitable for?:
All children would enjoy it but I am put off by body forms.

This 'Digital Placemat' was an idea originally developed by Bevan James (St Mary's) and shared with Lead teachers and Sue Crockett (Kawaha Point), they then used this idea as a prompt for places their students could go, it was a hardcopy resource (Sue shared an Excel document with me).
I have transferred this to a PDF and made the title of each game an interactive link and I would have either the document available on the desktop of easily accessible on the classroom computer.
Here is a screenshot of the resource (you can download your own copy below the picture)
